Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, champion of the German Football League (Bundesliga) for the first time in its history, was crowned the best player in the competition for the 2023-2024 season following a referendum by the German League.
The association explained – today, Monday – that the German talent (21 years old) outperformed:
- Guinean Serho Geraci and Deniz Undaf, Stuttgart’s duo, runner-up in the Bundesliga
- Nigerian Victor Boniface and Spaniard Alejandro Grimaldo are his teammates in Leverkusen
All players who won the Player of the Month award from the German League competed for the award, and Wirtz is the only one to win the Player of the Month award 3 times.
This is the first time that Wirtz, who is expected to shine with the German national team at Euro 2024, has won the award.
The German League stated that “Wirtz has shown this season, which is his first full season since recovering from a tear in the cruciate ligament in his knee in 2022, that he has all the ingredients.”
She added, “He has become a complete player. He can dribble, distribute and score, and he also has great speed.”
Wirtz scored 11 goals and made 11 assists, leading Leverkusen to win its first title in the Bundesliga and reach the final of the European League and the final of the German Cup.
